How would I make the flat face of a square rounder?

The way I can describe it best is if there were a cylinder placed there to simulate the roundness, like taking a cylinder that would match the width of the square at the cylinders middle vertices.

I am not sure I fully understand your question. Do you mean "face" or "plane"?  If a plane you could apply a bend modifier to make it more cylindrical.  A face by definition has three corners and is flat. To round it you would need to subdivide it into smaller faces.

You can create a box, then with enough number of faces (more = less faceted round area) ...

Then just select all the faces of one side and use Spherify modifier

Have you tried selecting the face and applying chamfer to it?
