Have you tried just dragging the image file from its location and straight onto the object, or onto a material in the material editor?

Hi. You need to load the image into a material (the diffuse slot), and then you can apply the material to the object.

Hey. I have a newer version of 3d max (2018). Such buttons are missing.

No it's not. I showed a "Standard" material, and you show a "Physical" material. In a Physical material the "Diffuse" is called "Base Color".

I'll strongly advise you to read up on materials in the help files 🙂
