How to create moon model for 3d printing?

I'm pretty new at this but was wondingering is there a way to map an image to a shape like a sphere so the actually model itself will change to represent the bumps on the image?

I can do it so when it renders it looks like it has bumps but the model still looks the same.

You'll be looking at displacement mapping via the Displace modifier.

The tricky part will be obtaining an accurate height map with sufficient resolution and detail.

The sphere will also have to be high resoutlon; probably millions of polygons.

I agree with everything Brock wrote. Use a high-resolution, greyscale image that represents height/depth - black being recessed area and white being the protruded area, mid grey being "0" displacement. You also want to use a high-resolution polymesh. The smoothness of your bumps will depend on the resolution of both image and mesh.

I posted a comment in another thread a while ago, but the example image I used is not very good. It's a straight conversion from a photo where you can see the shadow on only one side of the bricks. Ideally, all mortar portion should be dark to represent the recess. But this should give you an idea.

Edited Note: Also, note that bump or normal mapping does not actually change the underlying geometry. These are techniques to give you the illusion of bumps based on lighting. Displacement or direct sculpting on the mesh are methods to use if you want to physically alter the mesh.

Moon model would be easy with the right seamless texture and displacement if needed, let me know if you still looking for it.

Hey tehrania!

Thanks for your answer 🙂

Yes i'm still looking for it, you know how to di it ? because I never used 3ds max.

I found great pictures of the two faces in wikipédia, but it's only two angles, really good quality but that's it...

Yes, All you need is a high quality moon texture, find it in google images or any other search engine.

Then take it to photoshop and use offset tool in a + and - way to get rid of the seams. apply it to your model, also you can make a displacement map of it by using crazy bump or similar free software. better way would be even add that map in Zbrush to one sphere and export that to Obj after making it to have less polygons, if you need help for any step let me know and also don't forget to add kodus to me by pressing it in my post 😄
