How to apply a different smoothing group to each polygon on a mesh?

I'm modeling a low poly character, and when you pull up a vertex from a flat quad without smoothing groups, the two triangles that make up a quad become very apparent. I still want the model to look polygonal, except it should look like quads, not tris. the solution is applying a different smoothing group to each polygon, but even though my model is low poly, it's still around 800 polys, and applying smoothing groups manually becomes very time consuming.

 

is there a way to do this in max, or with a plugin, script or something?

Solution: add an "Edit Normals" modifier.

You can also try to use auto-smooth with 0 value.
