Hi! I'm working on an interior design in 3ds Max and need some help with a specific effect. I'm trying to recreate the shadow cast by a window like in the photo I attached. I'm not sure which modifier to use. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!window.jpg

Just place your lights. Max/Arnold does the shadow casting for you. For special effects, you may add an Arnold Gobo Filter (works with certain light types only)

In this scene, the main illumination comes from a PhysicalSky environment, assigned to a Arnold Skydome Light. The blueish shine is created by a Spot light with a Gobo Filter that has a Tiles texture assigned.

That's some good advice.

A couple other things to be aware of. The diameter of the light source affects the sharpness of the shadow. A smaller light makes sharper shadows and and a light with a larger diameter makes softer shadows. If you do use a Gobo, try to put it in the light source or, make it an object between the light source and the window. You don't want it to look like your planet has two suns, unless, your planet does in fact have two suns...

And distance of the light source, and directional parameters.

So in case of Sun (relative to Earth), because of its distance it behaves like 100% directional light, or point light on great distance,  size doesn't matter (for shadows)...

There are no soft shadows from direct sun!?!

Now that could be questionable, one reason that theres no (only) "direct" sun/light on Earth.

Filtering, reflecting, refracting...

But, really, I would search for soft daylight shadows in inside scenes, bad, cloudy weather...

I mean in Max, not searching for shadows in "real life"... Still...

Oh, wait, I am... Really hot summer! Still...

Thanks for your help!

I’ll try out different shadows and pick one.
