Geometry looks corrupt when read by another user.

Hello All,

I'm currently working on an architectural scene with a colleague. I've modeled the interior parts of a building and he's been working on the exterior for a rendered cutaway.

The geometry looks perfectly fine on my computer, but when he opens it on his (or merges it into his file) a lot of the objects are jagged and unusable. We're on the same version of Max and the same OS.

This also happened with one other user, but I haven't had any trouble opening anyone else's files or merging them into my scenes. It's just my files that seem to be the problem.

Hi,

Can you post a Max file so me, or anyone else can check it?,

If you don't want to post the whole file, then maybe a couple of geometries only,

It's hard to guess by only those screenshots,

Personally i'm using Max 2018 in case you decide to post a Max file.

Sure. I was just wondering if anyone had even run into a similar problem before since I've never heard of this.

I've attached a part of the file that appears to be some of the problem geometry. The file called corruptGeoTest_001.max is was I sent my coworker (Sam) and it looked totally normal. He opened it and it looked crazy on his end. He saved as SamCurrupt_001.max (he's good at spelling) which shows the bad geo. I had a different team member open the first file and it looked fine for him. This same thing has happened with another file and yet another coworker (Rosemary), but she's not around at the moment to test this particular one out.
So, I guess I have to assume it's a problem on Sam's end? and possibly Rosemary's?

Thanks for taking a look for me!

So, I just discovered that the people having the issue are not on the same service pack as me. Going to try to update them tomorrow to 2017 SP3 and see if that changes anything.

Hi,

I did a test where i saved the "corruptGeoTest_001" as a 2015 version,

And i opened it on my laptop where i have Max 2015 installed and the file became

Totally messed up. So i guess yeah, it's a matter of version and/or service pack compatibility,

Nothing wrong with the file itself, because i reopened the file i saved as Max 2015 on

My Max 2018 and it looked totally normal.

Thanks for testing that out. It does seem to confirm my suspicions. I'm updating the problem machines today and we'll see what happens.

Finally got the other machines updated to SP3 and everything is working smoothly new. Thanks for taking a look at the file.

Cheers!
