edit poly... shift+click and ctrl+click... ?

Hi everyone, sorry if this has been asked before...

So I'm using 2014 and something seems off.  Before, I thought that I was able to select a polygon and then add to my selection of polygons by holding down ctrl when I click on the next polygon... but then ALSO subject from my polygon selection by holding down shift when I clicked on a highlighted polygon.

Is that right?  Or maybe I've got shift and ctrl the other way around... but it doesn't matter for my question.

Because as it is now, I can add to my selection by holding ctrl while I click, BUT if I hold shift while clicking, it selects an entire ring or loop.  I really don't like that, so I'm hoping there's a way to either change it back to subtracting selections OR, is there a different modifier key/combo to press to subtract from my selections?

Thanks!! 🙂

Ctrl+Click = Add to selection
Shift+Click = Select the ring or loop based on the direction relative to an existing selection
Alt+Click = Remove from selection

In earlier versions Ctrl+Click both added to and removed from the current selection. This is no longer the case and you need to Alt+Click in order to remove an object or sub-object from the current selection. These key+click combinations are not, AFAIK, user configurable.
