Cannot select object except via Scene/Layer explorer

Hi,

For a couple of days i've been having a really weird issue. using max 2018 on a student license, win 10.

Issue:

Can't select ONE (as far as I can tell only one object is broken) object in scene except by clicking on it's name in the Scene/Layer explorer.

Furthermore when I have this object selected I am unable to select verts/edges./polys/elements via editable poly UNLESS I select almost the whole object's verts/edges/polys.

To clarify, I can't select a small group or even single verts/edges/polys but if I zoom out and select all/most of the object, it selects them.

The issue only seems to resolve if I close and re-open max.

Fixes tried:

I've followed a number of suggestions on the forums and from friends such as the following:

  • Hide/Unhide all objects
  • Reset 3DS Max prefs by deleting the ENU folder
  • Made sure thing such as ignore backfacing/show end results are toggled off
  • Made sure I haven't accidentally hidden parts of the object
  • Reset X-form

I've attached a screenshot of what I'm looking at (now with far less customization due to wiping the prefs).

Slight addition: Seems that sometimes whilst I can't select verts in edit-poly I can still select edges and polys.

Following advice from someone else, there seems to be two separate issues here:

1. Not being able to select the object as a whole:

Can be fixed by selecting everything in the scene CTRL+A then unselecting everything.

2. Not being able to select verts (primarily), edges, polys and elements in Edit-poly

Still no solution.

possibly you have strange shape (usualy spline) that can be corrupting selection system (possibly from another software, CAD dynamic block, another script on other software or those shape not flatten or have too far component etc).

Back up your file before, and try to find and delete it.

try top view then select (instead of orthographic), in some case, we can select in top view or perform selecting object by using layer, like you said before, then delete it.

Maybe you have same problem with me now, I can do select before, but today this case happen, in other forum have same problem, he try to send file and while another one open those file its normal hahaha.

I try to delete some strange object like spline from layout plan, and its solved for me now.
