Can't export model

I am experienced in 3D modeling using other programs and am excited to be able to learn 3DS Max with a Student license.  I was under the impression that I could export my work for my own use, however when I try to export a simple model, the resulting export is not a viable object.

Specifically, I am using the RailWorks plug in to export RW Intermediate Geometry .igs  When I export the export popup screen does not look like what it should for an RW export process.

Additionally, I have tried to export a simple model as a 3DS file and discovered that it was not a viable model with imported into one of my other design programs.

Does my student license not allow me to export anything, even for my own use?

I have attached two pictures. The first is what my export process looks like, the second is similar to what the RW export process looks like ( it is an old screenshot using Kuju instead of Rail Works.

seems like we go through this everyday first you need to match the 3ds max units to whatever other program you have used before to do this in max you go to custom unit setup you would need to check what units the other model is in and then match them you should not have any problems. if they are not match correctly then the model may come in big or small.

yes you can use the student verison for your own usage as long as you don't post it online or sell them model because that is a breach of the T&C of your agreement you signed once you accepted it
