3DS Max: Car modeling - problem with some polygons changing to gradient shaded!

Hi,

I have been modeling a car based on Digital tutors tutorial. I have problem with some polygons. On the view window they were originally evenly shaded, but now some of them have changed to gradient shaded. Only some of them have changed, not all. The problem remains when I render the picture without smoothing (see pictures). If I use smoothing, the car renders fine.

What is the problem - and how I could fix it?

There is no material attached to the model. If I try the following, i remove one polygon containing gradient color. Then I re-cap it using cap command. It corrects the polygon, but I cannot go through all the polygons containing gradient colors.

What's wrong???

I have 3DS Max 2014.

Model on the view window:

Rendered with smoothing:

It looks like a problem with Smoothing Groups.  Try selecting all of your polygons, and go to the Smoothing Groups rollout in the Modify tab.  With everything selected, hit the Clear All button.  That will get rid of the gradients and black faces.

Smoothing groups work by assigning one or more numbers to a face.  If the face shares the same number as an adjacent face, it will attempt to make the two faces appear smooth.  If they do not have the same number, you will see a hard edge between them.
