3ds max 2024 Edge dot ring not working correctly

I am using 3ds max 2024.2 and I am seeing constant issues with edge dot ring. When I select one edge, click dot ring, the selection skips an edge and messes up the entire operation. This is bad because the only way around it is to manually select the dot ring, which can be time consuming.. Is there an update I may be missing, please help!

Maybe you have two edges in same coords there? Try welding the mesh.

I did do that. 🙂 it was one of the first things I thought of, maybe it was a double edge or edge on an edge, but the mesh was fine. I was able to reproduce it even after double checking and welding. Seems to happen on objects like the shape I showed in the images, but worked on other round shapes that had minimal ngons ort when I inset the top ngon in the image.

Can you share this model?

Sure. I'm attaching the max file (2024) I have the object in the scene and an arrow pointing at an edge to start with. But really,  you can select any edge and hit the edge ring button and it will happen. Doesn't happen to all of my objects, but does happen frequent enough to be a problem and almost always with this object I am using for boolean.

Okay, that made me scratch my head for a while, but I believe I found the problem - you have odd number of edges (35) so there is no way to properly dot ring it. Gap is start/end spot which will inevitably have too few or too many edges selected.

You can make sure you have even number of edges to dot ring through or delete the poly on the back temporarily.

Hmmm, I have never run into this issue before. Feels like dot ring use to work in a manner where it would dot select up until it can't. And then when it couldn't it would just have two edges selected next to each other instead of what we are seeing here, two edges being deselected next to each other.

Is there a way to step select "dot loop/ring" actions?

You mean something like grow selection, but for dot ring? I don't think you can do it with native toolset.

Can't you just add another edge somewhere on flat part where it would not affect curvature to make number of edges even?

Yes for sure, there are a few ways to navigate around the issue. For the most part, dot ring and loop work fine. But I seem to remember dot loop stopping at the dot selection end if it had uneven number of edges instead of randomly deselecting edges. More like doubled up at the end versus removing an edge selection mid way through. I appreciate the help on input on this and thank you for investigating with me 🙂
