the autodesk cerifed ones are very expenive, i would increase your computer ram IMHO you can use any VGA card. as your scenes get bigger and the calculations when max renders from models, lighting sfx & animation all use up memory.

if you want to look at  the autodesk VGA recommeded then here is the link https://knowledge.autodesk.com/sites/default/files/file_downloads/3dsmax2018_GFX_ResultsSept2017.pdf...

Thank you! I found the link very helpful. I found a spare NVIDIA Geforce GT 710 here. Can I use this?

as i said you can use any VGA card, you want too. As long as you configure the drivers inside max, but as you only have 8gb it won't make any difference if your viewports are lagging IMHO.

don't forget the GT 710, that is a very low end graphics card. so it mite not work as well, and it's mainly used for gaming, surfing the net and watching videos and it's not really for cad programs.
