Soft blending between boolean meshes like Modo Meshfusion

Soft blending between boolean meshes like Modo Meshfusion

Modo Meshfusion can create topology based chamfers between boolean polygonal meshes. The current boolean implementations in 3ds Max are only useful as either a starting point for modeling in combination with Quadify or Quad Chamfer To simulate rounding. However these last options only work on quite simple and mostly flat meshes.

The main code of an Autodesk alternative to Modo's MeshFusion could also re-used in for example Maya. This is the main advantage of Modo over 3dsmax and Maya at the moment (for me).

much needed

Someone made an awesome plugin for Maya as you can see here - https://vimeo.com/204707688

Can we have something like this implemented in 3ds max? It`s just perfect for modeling and to quickly create nice shapes with chamfers.

Thanks.

That looks very similar to meshfusion in Modo! I would love to see this functionality in 3dsmax. 3dsamx 2017 came a bit closer with the new boolean tools, but the fillets/chamfer functionality is still missing!

Yeah it is similar to MF in Modo but this one doesn`t require to have many amounts of subdivisions like mesh fusion.

especially we need strip feature with booleans : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UAWiFEliO4

It can be implemented in 3Dsamx (it's not even that complex)! It has already been done for Maya:

http://www.hard-mesh.com/http://www.hard-mesh.com/

The code should:

  1. Use the Existing Booleans features of 3dsmax (for example the new Bool 3)
  2. Cut a strip where the meshes intersect of a variable width in both meshes.
  3. Create a 'chamfer' strip between the parts of the geometry (this strip should have an adjustable 'loop count/tension/chamfer hardness. (And average of topology of both sides)
  4. Connect the gaps on both sides of the new strip topology with topology that connects the meshes with the strip. (Maybe an adapted algorithm of the Quadify modifier could work).

There's an existing script that aims to make the chamfering of boolean intersections / shapemerged shapes on editable poly easier. But I wouldn't say it's not that complex.

We use MODO only for MeshFusion if MAX has this we don't use MODO in our pipeline ...

yep its on the designers radar.

Thanks

integrating an elegant live boolean system and intersection control per operator is 100% necessary for the future.
Currently, I'm bouncing between scripts and using zbrush's extremely powerful live booleans, but it looks like only modo is offering fast, clean, non-destructive workflows for this. Hardmesh seems to be a great alternative for maya users, but for those of us working in studios, licensing can become an issue, so I'll add my voice to the choir calling for integration directly into autodesk products. šŸ™‚

Blender already have similiar script "Bevel after Boolean".

https://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?434699-Bevel-after-Boolean

So that workflow available for almost all major 3d apps (Modo, Maya, Blender), except 3ds Max. šŸ˜•

BTW, when youā€™re at it improve/fix the current boolean as well. Right now (max 2017 at least) when you go above a certain polygon count it seems to convert quads to triangles and starts to fail when polygon count is high which is critical since you canā€™t subdivide after performing booleans since topology no longer works for subs obviously.

Please Add this feature its 2019 now and we are still waiting for a feature that was promised years ago.

what kind of geometry that program produce ?

Not sure what you mean by this? Fusion 360 is a separate cad modeling software that use Nurbs and T-splines.

Maybe you are thinking about a boolean operation like"mesh fusion" in Modo which creates a boolean mesh-strip fillet around the intersecting edges? I think there is a separate request for this somewhere...

Fusion360 does all of its boolean operations as a solid representation not as polys. What specifically are you hoping would be the feature set or the workflow/results?

Thanks
