Cinema 4D has this squeaky UI that lets you convert their "Command Panel" (Attribute Manager) in many other types of managers allowing you to switch for different editors and sets of options/commands. This avoids opening additional floating windows/the need to deal with overlapping windows/searching for them in the menus etc. and provide a centralized location for most of your settings. This can be done manually or automatically based on what you click in their Object Manager (In C4D this is both Scene Explorer and "Modifier Stack" another neat feature of the program).

In a similar fashion Scene explorer in 3ds Max has so many modes to switch to. This is a great design choice and should be introduced for the Command panel as well.
