When in snap mode, the transform gizmo just gets in the way. I usually hit the minus key to make it very small and that makes it much easier to snap verts. If I try to snap anywhere near the transform gizmo, it skews the placement/snapping of the verts or doesn't allow me to grab the correct vert if there's more than one in my selection.
There is a better shortcut you can use to temporary hide the Transform Gizmo. There is a shortcut under MainUI category named Show Transform Gizmo. It will toggle the visibility of the gizmo and can be used while snapping without interrupting the snapping.
This shortcut can also be found under the Views menu (found in the main menus).
