Convex and/or Concave only on Chamfer Modifier

Convex and/or Concave only on Chamfer Modifier

Oftentimes I'm finding myself wanting to chamfer external or convex edges while leaving internal or concave edges alone.  I would love to see an option to allow for this.

I don't have strong opinions on how it's done, but figured I'd offer at least a suggestion - I could see two ways:

- add a button that enables the min/max angle to range from -180 to 180 instead of 0-180, where negative angles indicate internal angles - the option would be disabled by default for backwards compatibility.

- add two toggle buttons to the Filter By section: Concave and Convex, where the default is both enabled for backwards compatibility.

Is any other software allowing this sort of control?

unsure, I really only use 3ds Max.

It should be doable. Edges that are chamfer-able needs to have connected faces to them obviously, but in order to check whether the angle is convex or concave you essentially need a signed angle, but that should be possible if the face normals are taken into consideration. Imagine two quad polygons connected in a 90 degree angle. If they are treated as just three connected points that forms an angle, how do we determine which "side" of the edges connecting them determines the angle? One side will be 90°, but the other one will be 270°. But that's where the polygon direction/normal can help.

Same principle should be applicable if we assume that three collinear points amounts to 0°. If there is a direction derived from the polygon normals, this means that rotating one of the edges to one side increases the angle towards 180°, while the other direction gives us -180°.

I have no idea how the Chamfer angle filters actually work, but I see no technical reason why it shouldn't be possible. Being able to extend back to -180° would be a nice quality-of-life feature to the modifier.

Why don't you use Data Channel modifier?
- Use Dirt Map preset in Data channel modifier (set Convex or Concave values).
- Set in Chamfer modifier Selection-> "Edge Verts Selected"

yes. that is something I could do. there is also selecting the edges in the graphite tools and using the same Selected Edges.

just because there is a solution, it does not negate the validity of wanting this improvement to the modifier. Why have edit poly when edit mesh will do?

I would rather want to see this out if the graphite modeling tools inside edit/editable poly and also brought over from that dirt map preset in DCM and brought into the sale modifiers.
