Did you mean:

3DS Max LT

3DS Max LT

Will there be a 3DS Max LT release similar to what you did with Maya by offering an LT version for indies? I would be very interested in purchasing a 3DS Max LT subscription if so.

Thanks!

Actually I'd also be interested in this, however, I have my own vision of what a 3ds Max LT version should be.

First and foremost, Max is a great modeler, probably has the best tools. So I would make an LT version that would only be geared towards modeling, remove all of the other stuff from it and offer only the tools and modules that are used for modeling. I guess if you guys use a modular approach for coding this shouldn't be such a big problem. So what would you leave in this version of Max. As stated all of the modeling and UV tools, no animation, no renderer, no particles etc..

You then could offer discount on Arnold purchases for example. Scripting should be available and also plugin support. No poly limit, you would however have a seat limit. For example 10 licenses per company and 1 device limit per licence. Monthly price the same as Maya LT or maybe a little bit less. That way, you don't make two competing products. Studios that need animation would still gravitate towards Maya. Max LT would in this case offer less for the same or maybe even slightly smaller amount of money.

So what market would you then gear this towards? I think there is a major untapped potential in the hobbyist market and small studios. Take me for example I've used Blender for the past 4 years basically only for modeling. My skills and appetites have grown beyond of what Blender is capable of doing. I mean yes, you can do anything in it, but that's not the problem, it's the experience and the time you need to fight the tools inability to perform an action without deforming the volume of the mesh. For me it has become really frustrating. So I switched to Modo because it's the only thing that I am sort of able to afford, and again was completely disappointed. The tools are fine it's the stability that's the problem, it's utterly horrendous, Blender is more stable and that's not a joke, MODO really is that bad. So at this point I am running out of options. I don't want to use Blender any more, Modo has it's own problems, the only route that remains is Autodesk. I'd buy Maya LT right now, but the poly limit is something I really, really don't like. I want to make complex models and export them for texturing and rendering to other software.

To make a long story short (a bit late, but who cares), 3d for hobbyist is a massive growing market. There are a lot of people who want to start making CG even maybe get a job in this profession someday. Yes Blender has basically this market for itself, but it has a big problem, very few studios are using it. Autodesk could gain a lot of mind share here with people that aren't able to go to CG schools. So basically sacrifice a bit of time and money, get to the people that aren't able to or can't afford to go to school, but have time to learn at their own pace at home, grow your mind share and create profit down the road. I'd subscribe to this kind of software in a heartbeat.

If you're already on Blender I think you're ahead of the curve. I'm trying to slowly move our studio onto Blender. Sure, the modelling process in some cases is unorthodox but given the costly alternatives, it's a clear choice for me 😊

I would also like to see a modelling only 3ds max.

I must say, honestly, I don't like Blender for hardsurface modeling. The tools aren't as good. Though I hope that they will become better with 2.80, but honestly I wouldn't hold my breath. For example, there is no set flow tool which I love. The modeling tools in Blender distort your shape, they don't hold the volume of a mesh particularly well. That's the problem. Yes it's free, but every time I model in it I feel like I am battling Blender, forcing it to do what I want. Blender is not helping me in the modeling process, it constantly trying to make tiny mistakes that I need to watch out for in order to fix them. Modeling tools are too unpredictable. Bevel tool is also one of the disasters. Try to test it on a non square angle edge, you'll see what I mean and don't even get me started on the modifiers. Try to bend something with a simple deform modifier, bevel modifier sometimes only works on verts and so on and so on. Lots of little foibles that really ruin ones experience.
