URGENT - 2023.2 update cannot open scenes created previous 2023 version?

I've tried opening scenes created using 2019, 2022 etc and 2023.2 opens those fine.

But.... 2023.2 does NOT open scenes I've created using 2023.1?????????????????????????????

PLEASE, PLEASE AUTODESK FIX THIS ASAP - I have projects I have created using 2023 and need to work on URGENTLY.

Thank you.

Hi @JezEmin

Thanks for reaching out.
Can you share one of your scene? also what errors are you getting when trying to open them?

Hi Daniel,

There is no error. Got frozen at 73% loading the project for hours.

And CPU working around 90%.

Same exact issue. We need a fix for this ASAP!!!

Files get stuck at 73% with close to 100% cpu usage. Replicated issue on several workstations.

Its geometry related. I can merge all other types of objects.

See attached example file!

Thanks @DanielCantin @ads_czechoj @abrahamZZG2U @Grace.Tevlin ,

I cannot share a file because these are for a client, but I get the same issues reported by Grace and Abraham, ie. that it gets stuck at 73% and near 100% CPU usage and it never loads up the scene at all (I just end up killing 3DS Max via TaskManager).

I can repro the issue using abrahamZZG2U  's. file.

I get the hang right after the missing maps dialog

2 other posts related with extra info:

- 2023.2 Broke my scene

- Chamfering any edge on an open mesh causes 3Ds Max 2023.2 to hang up and load CPU to 100%

I wonder if it's related to this chamfer problem.  Did everyone in this thread use the chamfer modifier in the scenes that aren't opening?

If so, I wonder if a startup script could be made to disable all modifiers on load.

Best Regards,

Probably, the scenes we have tend to have lots of chamfer modifiers applied to objects.

I was just looking in other threads and it seems maybe related to that modifier, so there's some confirmation there.

We have the exact same issue. Some scenes do not open and hang at 73%. Our whole team of 5 people lost a days work because of this issue. Please fix it ASAP Autodesk!

Any fix? Basically, 3DSMAX has been bricked and I have a Friday (today) deadline!

Uninstalling the latest update makes MAX unusable (gone!). So now I have to install 3DS MAX from scratch, all my plugins, and scripts. Probably two days of work. This is irresponsible, at the least!

You shouldn't have to do that. Simply uninstalling 3ds max 2023 and reinstalling the 3ds Max 2023.1 update should keep all of your scripts, plugins and ui. I did it here on 4 workstations today.

1. Uninstall 3ds Max 2023 through windows

2. Download 3ds Max 2023.1 thru your autodesk account (under product updates)

3. Install as usual

Don't touch your scripts, ui, or plugins! Its about a 20-40 min exercise. Way more managable.

3ds Max 2023.1 is in a different place today. See attached jpg for new location.

Will this solve the loading issue? I know how to install an update.

It would be good if Autodesk could give us an update or an estimate of when they anticipate the fix will be available.  I've been checking on here so many times today because the last thing I want to do is reinstall everything, so I'm holding off for that reason.

I've never done what @abrahamZZG2U is suggesting.  I'm sure it's worked for him, but I just dread it going wrong for me and then having to reinstall everything from scratch.

On a side note, I appreciate that errors can and do happen, but this rollout on an error of this type really makes me question what sort of program testing is done at Autodesk, or are they just expecting its paying customers to simply put up with this incredible magnitude of ineptitude and beta test ad-infinitum?
