Toolbars resetting

Every time I start Max 2018.1 I keep seeing the same floating toolbars that I keep removing and saving. They both are Vray toolbars. When I choose to revert to startup layout under customize menu, they go away. But they keeping coming back in the same location every time I load Max.

Any ideas?

Hello @evan.lindsay,

I have moved your post to a new thread so that I can help you with this issue. In some cases similar issues have differing resolutions so by moving this thread it increases the chances that other users will find the information helpful and that your solution can be marked. I have also edited the title slightly for more efficient searching. Thanks for your understanding.

If your toolbars are resetting each time you load Max, you likely don't have permissions to edit the settings folder.  Are you on a personal machine or a company machine?  What is your current OS?  Is your settings folder set to read-only?

Thanks

Hello @evan.lindsay,

You have a permissions problem of some kind most likely.  Can you please describe your setup to me?  What is your current OS?  Is it a company machine or personal?  Do you have admin rights?  Have you tried running Max as admin?   Any group security policies in place?

I Alfred,

Any solution for this.  I have a realflow toolbar which always appears in the center of my screen when I open Max 2019.  Other toolbars remain where I place them so I don't think it is a permission problem.  Seems to be an issue mostly with third party plugins.

Which file would this be stored in.

Thanks,

Rod

Ok @irishman_team_kilber, message received.  I've been self absorbed lately and I really should spend more time in here and I'll start doing that.   I tend to post in bursts but if you @ mention me I'll always show up!

Hello @rodbrew2,  Generally, I believe toolbar placement is in the UI folder located at:   "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\201X - 64bit\ENU\en-US\UI"

My Vray, Phoenix, Hairfarm, etc toolbars are listed in the file: MaxBackupUI.cuix, but interestingly my iToo plugins (which have docked toolbars) are not listed there.  So there must be another place where they are stored.  I see an .ini file in "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\201X - 64bit\ENU\en-US\plugcfg" so perhaps some toolbars save details in there or a similar folder.  For this reason, we might now want to discount permissions, perhaps one of those files is 'read only'.

If you run Max as admin, does it help?  Are any of the files in that folder set to 'Read Only"?  What OS are you using?  It might be necessary to ask NextLimit exactly where it's stored and see if that file has permissions.  RealFlow is one plugin I've never been able to afford so I don't know about its' inner workings.

Best Regards,

Alfred

Hi Alfred,

I'm running latest update of 2019 on a Windows 10 machine. I have full admin rights. If I place a default max toolbar it sticks where placed. The Realflow toolbar always shows up in the middle of the screen. I actually have a Forest Pack menu that docks at the end of the main toolbar even though I move it somewhere else.

I've checked all the files in /Users/ that were touched when saved but can't find anything that looks like a position for the toolbar. There is a file called MaxStartUI.cuix.layout which just has one entry mainstate="@ByteArray(\0\0\0\xff\0\0\0... Not sure what this is. I'll keep looking.

Which toolbar is floating for you @cmoss?  Is it only Real Flow?

For me Realflow is floating and Forest Pack is always placed in the top toolbar.

I found that if I create a new Default Workspace with everything placed correctly upon loading things are still out of position.  However if I then hit the Reset to Default State everything is correct.  It seems like Max has the proper info but is just not setting the workspace up correctly on loading.

That sounds possible.  It may be this should be logged by anyone with repro steps.  A screencast would help them too.  It may also be that the script for RealFlow isn't registering properly, hard to say.  Seems a common factor here.

For me it is Realflow floating and RailClone Pro docked at the top.

Does the problem only affect folks on W10?  Curious...
