You likely have 'Real Time' ticked in the Timeline settings. Try unchecking that. If the video card can't render the Timeline in Real Time, it will try to at least skip frames to simulate the actual time.
By unticking that, it won't render 'Real Time' but it will step through the Timeline frame by frame.
