The new SKP importer is DISASTER

I extensively compared the New vs Old SKP importers and it takes up to X20 (!!!) more time to import large .skp files.

For instance, 100K entities (1.5M faces), "skip hidden" is ON  -  would take roughly 1.5 min to vs 30 min..

Dear Autodesk, WHY? Things are meant to get better with new versions..

P.S. I'd share some example files if you'd keep it private.

Hello @ROM_RRR ,

Thank you for reaching out to us.  We are sorry to hear that you have seen such long import time with the new SketchUp importer.  We will contact you in PM to get this SketchUp model to debug this issue.

Best regards,

Libei

Dear Autodesk lot of time has passed.. Is there any progress in solving the issue?  This is especially bothering taking into account that the proper old importer was ditched in v.2024 - thus forcing us to stay in v.2023.

Truly shocking customer service from a behemoth with no staff.

Well the new importer not simply slower, worse or less effective. No! Large texturized skp files simply get  stuck forever

Hi,

While I have read a few posts regarding the, lets say 'sub-optimal' performance of the new SKP importer compared to the older version, I also know that most SketchUp models are completely disgusting in their internal optimisation. In a perfect world rubbish programs like SketchUp wouldn't exist (authors own sentiments).
But seeing as it does, and people actually use it (?), I would highly recommend using this SketchUp add-on:

https://extensions.sketchup.com/extension/046175e5-a87a-4254-9329-1accc37a5e21/clean-uphttps://3dsho...

It will probably halve the size of most project files coming from SketchUp, by getting rid of tonnes of uneccecssary junk that the makers of SketchUp seem to think is necessary to include in their horrible file format.
For the amount of time and effort people put into that nasty program, they could have learnt Revit or Max, even AutoCad. To me it makes no sense. Sorry, I really hate SketchUp.

Mate my files are s.u.p.e.r clean, precise and optimized - this is not a subject of this thread.

Adesk broke texture orientation translation - it takes forever to import complex textured skp file.

P.S. Don't judge by program and its file format by the stuff you are getting from kids  of 3DWharehouse or uneducated architects.

P.P.S. I use those cleaners for decades several times per day

Hi,
Sorry for being a bit harsh on SketchUp. It is a detailed program, and has vRay, kinda. And you're right, not a lot of people I have gotten projects off of have been Gurus with it.

As for the import problem with the new version of the .skp importer, it's looking like they should have kept the old one, and not have gotten rid of it. Release it along side, not instead of.

I hope it gets sorted soon, all I can do is bump this post.

Hello @ROM_RRR :

3ds Max 2023.3.4 Security Fix doesn't have the new features and improvements introduced in 3ds Max 2024.2.  To benefit the new SketchUp importer, you need to update to 3ds Max 2024.2.

Libei

@JasonLuckett I just ran across this while working with another SketchUp related post. I thought I might try to help your frustration to let you know that this is “User to User” forum. It has never been a place to engage Customer Service or the Devs. On a rare occasion they’ll pop in here but if you need Customer Service, this is not the place to do it. Hagen has a permanent link in the top of the main Max Forum that will help you get to support at Autodesk. What goes on here is just us trying to help each other. I hope that eases some of your frustration here.
