Teething Problems with Max 2025

Hi all,

We're having a couple of issues with Max 2025 (updated last week).

  • This has happened to a colleague a couple of times today
    • When he makes a layer active (presses the layer icon to make it blue and add things to the layer) his Max has just closed down without warning.
      • No would you like to save  backup box or anything
  • We've had a couple of issues where we can't apply materials to objects.
    • The Assign Material to Selection button randomly doesn't work
    • Pressing A doesn't work
    • Then it does - with me, it was when I created a box - that then made Max work correctly and I could add a material to my intended object.

We're up to date with all service packs etc

Any ideas?

Thanks

I understand your brevity, but that assumes certain things that I cannot. So make sure your "etc" updates include: Windows OS, GPU Drivers, and any 3rd party plugins, including <insert your choice of rendering engine>. You could uninstall plugins as a test as well. If that is too ambitious, maybe try on a default install of Max (no plugins, no extras, no nothing just latest Max 2025).

Beyond that, here are some questions to answer on your end that might get you on the track to a solution:

  • Is there anything different, or that maybe happened with the texture image files? For example, were they recently converted to a different format, or copied/moved from an old source? (Corrupted Files)
  • Is the image file size/resolution overkill? Image files with excessive file size for the intended purpose can bloat Max memory usage.
  • Are you applying complex Photoshop documents (or other proprietary formats) instead of universal formats such as JPG, PNG, or TIF?
  • Along the same lines, operations can get wonky if Max is operating at near maximum system RAM and/or utilizing a near full system drive for virtual memory page file.
