Smart objects in 3DS Max?

I'm creating an interior design of a house that will have 6 unique styles. Each style will have it's own wall texture, flooring, paint colors etc. Sometimes I have to adjust certain things like window height, or the depth of a room of something like that.. my problem is I have to go back to each file and adjust them separately.

I know Photoshop has a feature called 'smart objects' where you only have to adjust the object once and it affects all files. It makes it incredibly nice! Does 3DS Max have a similar feature?

Thanks!

The most similar thing to that in architecture are the AEC objects: walls, windows, stairs, handrails etc. They have also IDs materials for each side of the walls for easy materials

If you have already the geometry and you simply want different sets of materials and lighting for the same scene the scene states can be useful

You should use XRef scenes where you can merge a max file as an external reference.
