In max you know how there's the 'invisible' mode so that you can see through things? They should have a strength bar that allows you to choose from like 0% (no transparency) to 100% (for full transparency) And anywhere in between of course. So you can customise how well you can see through things for editing underneath the invisible mesh.

That 1-100% option also should exist for the 'Shaded' option in 'Display' too, allowing you to customise the strength of the shading and being able to make it darker or lighter of course.

Why aren't these common sense abilities not implemented?  Reply if you agree with me!

I usually just apply a material to it and adjust the opacity of it to address your #1 here.  Any type of material will do, I often use legacy.  You also have the "Visibility" property in object properties which does the same thing, but can cause render problems if you forget to adjust it back.

If you use a material (like I do) then the self illumination option addresses your #2 above.

Worth a look.  I think that they do exist, just in materials instead of viewport settings.  There's also XView which might be configred to do what you want, I haven't used it in years.

3ds Max has a multitude of ways to make objects "see through - which "'invisible' mode" are you referring to exactly?

I understand, the quick hotkey for it is Alt-X, I use it a lot.  3dsmax and Maya are more like operating systems than consumer grade applications.  Which means much of this type of customization is typically up to the studio / user.   I agree it would be cool to have it.  This could probably be scripted somewhat easily with ChatGPT or 3dsmax GPT.
