Selecting objects changes view

Hi there

I recently upgraded from 3DS Max 2015 to 2017. When I'm looking at some objects in my top view, and I select one of those objects, the topview changes to orthographic mode by itself (which I don't want, of course).

I searched the forum for a solution, but wasn't able to find any. Is there an option to turn this off?

Hello @np,

I'd like to help you with this issue regarding random viewport switching.  Are you using any devices currently such as a 3d mouse or tablet in conjunction with 3ds Max?  Could you please try to reset your 3ds Max settings for me?   Thank you very much for the information and for trying that.

Best Regards,

Hi! I have no other devices attached to my computer, than my mouse and my keyboard. Resetting the 3ds max settings seemed to do the trick though 🙂

Thank you!

Thank you very much for the update @np!  That is bizarre, but I am very glad it's working now.  Have a great week!

Best Regards,

I run into the same problem view changing when selecting an object.  Resetting the preferences might work but it also means removing all customisation.  A better solution would be nice.  As a newbie coming from Autocad, trying to navigate in 3ds Max is quite a challenge.  I have only a few shortcuts I added for now but I will probably add some more as a get to know the software.

Hello, there is still the problem in 2018. Yes, you can restart 3Dmax and it might work, but I believe it is not the solution. It is a nightmare selecting something and switching to Orthographic view.

This is still a bug in 2018, and now I'm going to have to rebuild my toolbars and preferences because the only solution is to reset everything? That's ridiculous.

Is this solved?

How do you prevent the selected object going to isometric view.

Hi,

In any viewport click the + sign in the top left corner near the viewport's name,

The in the drop-down list, go to ViewCube and uncheck Show The ViewCube,

You can also use the shortcut Alt+Ctrl+V, now restart 3DS Max.

Hi Alfred,

Resetting preferences seems to fix the problem, but only temporarily. Is there anything we can do to prevent this issue from popping up in the first place? It seems to happen once every 1-2 weeks and while it's not a huge effort to reset prefs, it's starting to frustrate my team. Any ideas what the root cause of the problem is?

Thanks,

Jinmu

Found another fix. Seems to have to do with Selection Sensitivity. Just needs to be turned off in Viewport Configuration > Steering Wheels.

hi,

the problem still continues.

I've tried many things I saw on the forums but none worked:

- Reset ENU

- Turned off Improve Quality Progressive

- Erased all the Splines

- Ungrouped everything

- Restarted the PC after erasing ENU.

- Turned off ViewCube

- Turned off steering wheel

- Update Quadro Drivers

 😞

Hi, is this happening with a specific Max file?

If you open a fresh Max file and added some simple geometries, does it happen also?

Yes, it also happens with simple geometry.
Sometimes it makes the geometry to have a ghost while moving it when it changes to Orthographic view by itself.

hi everybody!

I solved the problem after a long time. On the Viewport Configuration there is a menu 'SteeringWheels', at the section 'Orbit Tool' You have to delete the tick mark of Selection Sensitivity. For me a bit hard to understand why is it useful. Anyway I hope it will be work for You too.
