Screen size Resolution

Screen size Resolution

Hi.

I have a cylindrical TV screen I've modeled and I want to add a movie clip to it to make it a TV Screen. I've imported the EXR file into max to try fit the footage onto the cylindrical screen via UVIng but the image does not fit perfectly. I;ve tried using UWV map and Unwrap UVW but the results are always the same. the image I;ve brought in is too big for the model and is stretched on the model. How do I make the footage fit perfectly inside the screen to make a large Cylindrical TV Screen? Do I need to change the resolution of the footage to fit the screen, if so how and what software must I use for that, could I use DAvnic REsolve? Any help would be great, thanks.

Please see 2 pics attached. Pic2 shows what the footage should like on the cylindrical screen and pic1 shows the cylindrical screen in max with the footage material stretched.

The easy way to do this is to create your screen with the same aspect ratio as the image or video you want to project on it.    Example: Say you have 1280 x 720 video that you want to project on your screen model.

1.  Make your screen (a plane) the same dimensions or any multiple of those dimensions like 128.0 (width)x 72.0 (length) units.

2. Put the image or video into the diffuse slot of a standard material and assign it to your plane.  It will match perfectly the screen without any distortion or hassling with UVs. (the plane primitive by default generates mapping coordinates.)  Note ; if you happened to drag out the plane with length = 128 and width = 72 you can just rotate the image 90 degrees via the W value in the material editor mapping coordinates rollout (see below).

3. Apply a bend modifier to the plane and adjust the settings to get your desired screen curvature.  See my example below.  You need enough segments in your plane for the bend modifier to make a smooth curve (I used 12).

That's it.  You can always adjust the dimensions of the screen to fit the size of your scene.  But obviously, you have to adjust the length and width values proportionately to maintain the same aspect ratio or you will again have distortion of the image.    Hope it works for you.

Final note: If you use the scale transform to uniformly scale the screen in your scene, it is good practice to reset the Xform (Utility Panel > Reset XForm>Reset Selected and then,  Collapse>Collapse Selected.)
