Hello Everyone

Happy to be here,

I have windows 7, and I had 2 versions of Max 2016 and 2020 last week, the default for opening my files where the 2016. after I uninstalled the 2016 to have only the 2020, my saved projects are not showing the 2020 icon as a default program and when I click on the files they will open an EMPTY new max file with the 2020.

I wonder to know if anybody can help . . . . thanks

again, happy to be hear among such people. . .   🙂

Hi,

Sounds like the default for .max files is out of whack. 😉

Try this (from Microsoft Support) - when you get to "Change Program" choose Max 2020.

  • Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button  and then clicking Default Programs.
  • Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  • Click the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default for.
  • Click Change program.
  • Click the program that you want to use as the default for the file type you selected, or click the arrow next to Other Programs to show additional programs. (If you don't see Other Programs, or your program is not listed, click Browse to find the program you want to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able to open the file type or protocol, your choices will be limited.)

If you don't see the program you want to use as the default, click the arrow next to Other Programs to see a list of programs available on your computer.
  • Click OK.

Hey Daf

thank you very much for the reply, I've did this step before and the problem is 2 things:

my windows doesn't show the 3ds max icon properly ( show it as an unknown file icon), and any saved file with the 2020 will open as an empty brand new project, except if  i will open Max 2020 first then opening the project from inside max itself. this is the only way I can work on any saved file, old or recently made.

again Thank you very much for the reply. . . .

Hmmm - try this...

Right click one of your max file icons, choose to open with > Choose default program

Do not choose any of the recommended programs - browse instead to your 2020 max directory (program files/autodesk/3ds max 2020/3dsmax.exe

Put check in "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

Click "OK"

See if that works now

Note - even on my system it shows the max exe as generic file type too.

If above doesn't work and there are no other replies here post the issue on https://www.sevenforums.com/ - they've helped me in the past with Win7 issues.

Thanks again for coming back to me and trying to help, I tried this one too, but didn't work, I got on an online chat with a Microsoft technician since it's a windows issue before being a Max or an application issue, after online checking and troubleshooting, he suggested to re-install the 3ds Max 2020 to overcome the old registry and cache image  stored on the computer. So I guess the solution is this one after all.

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous

I wanted to follow up here, did re-installing 3ds Max resolve this issue like the Microsoft tech suggested? Feel free to mark your previous post as the solution if so 😄
