I have a mesh that I applied a skin modifier onto it.

coCreateInstance() failed

Try running it logged in as the Administrator. Not all admins are equal...

Max 2016 (SP1/EXT1)
Win7Pro x64 (SP1). i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX11.
nVidia GTX760 (2GB) (Driver 430.86).

Same problem here.

Max 2011
win xp pro sp3 32 bit.

Created an admin password, ran max as admin, applied skin modifier to mesh for use with biped. Error dialogues and the cocreatinstance () error. Clicked yes. Can apply modifier but it refuses to work.

There are no other admin options as far as I know and I have 2011 on a 64bit at home where everything runs just fine (better than fine actually). Researching this shows most folks are successful with firing up max and applying the modifier as admin once fixes the problem. Not my problem though. I think this is a 32 bit thing and as the report rate is low I am guessing my case is a bit unique.

Any help appreciated.

I also ran into the same problem, and I was wondering if anyone could help. I'm sort of stuck because I'm logged in as the adminstrator, but I still get this message.

I have suddenly run into the same problem. Max 2011. My skin was working a couple of weeks ago, and now when i appy the skin modifier to a new model, a simple model, it bugs out a little bit and gives me the CoCreateInstance() failed message. Doesn't really work once i hit ok though. Not sure what is up, but i need to have my skin working. I am the administrator, and logged in as so....Please any information anyone would have to this would be great.

Same thing was on my machine winxp32+3dsmax2011 when i want to create CAT object.
To fix problem i type «regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2011\MAXComponents.dll"» in command line (win->run...).
Restart 3dsmax.
Hope it would be useful.

Start (button) > Run

Or open a Command Prompt (probably on Start > Programs > Accessories)

In either case, enter the command as described above then press Enter.

Hello,
I was having the exact same problem.
The solution went from the creation of an account to enter in windows.
Previously, I was using the by default administrator account the use windows.
I created my own account, restarted the computer to reboot windows and the message didn't appear again.
Many thanks to your messages, which putted me on the way.
Have a nice day 🙂
Pierre.

With Max off

1. Windows Button+R to open Run window
2. type> regsvr32.exe
3. open an explorer window and navigate to your installed directory (ie. C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max2011)
4. Drag MaxComponents.dll into the run window after your text "regsvr32.exe" and then hit enter.
5. Start Max

Just ran into this problem again with 3dsmax 2009.
The last time it happened the fix above worked for me. (regsrv32)
But today it didn't, when I hit enter, I got another error.

So I downloaded and installed the latest hotfix and that has seemed to
fix the issue.

im having the same problem now as you have had with skin modifier in max 2012. the same admin error appears when file is opening and skin is no longer effects by bone translation, rotations.
tried the regsvr32.exe fix... but doesnt fix 😕 sometimes adding the skin modifier effects a mesh but the character is to the left of the rig... out of his bones. very strange

any help please 🙂

I would like to give a big thank you to Eicronie for sharing on how to fix this scary issue. You are my hero.
I got this issue by removing old versions of Max on my system.
