Problem with standard mode viewport in max 2017

Hi

In 3ds max 2017 sometimes when I'm working in standard mode and want to see maps in viewports, when I enable show map in viewport option, objects become hidden or wireframe while I'm still in standard mode. This problem just occurs sometimes and I must restart the PC several times to it shows correctly. In any other mode everything is OK but because of polycount and file size and maps counts it's very slow in them and in standard this problem doesn't allow me to edit UVs.

This is my rig:

3ds max 2017 sp3 + EP1

vray 3.40.4

windows 10 enterprise RS

intel xeon e5-2640

g-skill tridentx 32gb

asus geforce gtx 960 2GB

asus z10pe-d16 ws

corsair 128gb ssd

WD Blue 3tb

the image of viewport is attached ...

Have you tried switching to Direct3D instead of using Nitrous?

3dsmax.exe -h

Thanx for your reply ... I'll  give it a try and post the result ... but it's oddness is that it's working randomly, I think that if it was nitrous it should have happened every time not occasionally ... thanks by the way.

Unfortunately, after changing the graphic mode to directx or opengl the result was no better. See the attachment please ....

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

Does this only happen with Vray materials?  Can you tell me a bit more about your material setup, such as if they are standard Vray mats or if they are Blend materials, etc.  If you turn off transparency in the viewport, does it help?  Are there opacity maps in these materials anywhere?

The thing that strikes me as odd here is that you have to restart several times for it to show correctly.  That does sort of indicated hardware problems, but it's hard to say.  Does this persist if you use DX9?   Thanks for any additional information.

Hello

I have had the same problem. The problem occurs even if I use Vray materials with just a diffuse bitmap and without transparency maps of any kind. It works fine if I change to use Realistic materials with maps but it slows down the display performance. Sometimes normal Shaded materials with maps works and sometimes not, usually not.

I changed the display driver from Nitrous Direct 3D 11 to Nitrous Direct3D 9 (or DX9?) as you suggested and it works just fine so I guess the problem is in Direct 3D version 11. Thanks for the tip!

Hello @Anonymous,

I just wanted to follow up here, any progress on this issue?

Hello @mikko_kovasiipi,

It might have something to do with Vray materials and DX11, but I haven't seen that issue with Vray personally.  Which version of Vray is this?  Did it also happen with stock Max materials?  I'm glad it's working for you now, regardless!  Thanks for the information.

Hi

Sorry for delay.

I've been busy so I couldn't check here at the moment.

As mikko.kovasiipi said I have the same experience. But when I switched to Nitrous DX9 everything goes black. and when I switched to Legacy DX9 everything was ok but performance was horrible as high quality mode. I installed 3ds Max 2016 SP3 with the exact same Vray and everything was ok with no problem. Even with Nitrous DX11. So I don't know the problem is Vray for Max 2017 or the Max itself.

For the next week I'll do these experiments.

I'll working with other renderers like Art or Corona to see if problem occurs again.

After that I will reinstall Max 2017 and test if that happens again. Then I install service packs one by one and finally install the Extension Pack to see if they are problem. This process may take a while but as soon as I find when the problem shows up again I'll write a feedback here.

Thank you for your concern and patience.

Hi again.

In the last week before I began my progress, strangely most of the time the problem did not appears and I encountered that just twice. But I started my progress anyway and now I just have installed the SP3 (no EP1) and so far the problem is the shading gone too dark if viewing angle goes too parallel with surfaces and the polygon selection problem mentioned in this Link.

I attached the sample of the shading problem.

FYI this is standard mode.

But I think this will do if the problem doesn't appear again.

Thanks for the update @Anonymous.  If it persists I can create a private folder for you to check the files.  In the meanwhile I have added your feedback to my notes.

Hi again

After a 3 days nothing bad happened so far and everything was OK and I'm very happy. but I can not confirm that the problem is EP1 or just reinstalling max was the solution. By the way I adored new map in EP1 but at this time I can not take the risk of having that problem again.

P.S: The selection problem is still there and viewport shading is behaving as I described before.

Hello @Anonymous,

The selection problem is a bug that needs to be fixed, there's no workaround or nothing I can do there I'm afraid.  For your shading issue, if you'd like, I can create a private folder for you to investigate your scene.  Without having something to look at, it's difficult to advise on this.  It may just be a setting that needs to be tweaked in the Per View Presets.

Hello @JO2072,

Using DX9 seems to help for most people.  This issue has various causes, so knowing what kind of materials you are using as well as graphics card model would be helpful, please.  Do you see any improvement after adjusting settings in the image below?  Thanks for the info!

Hi Alfred

I will try your settings when I'm back in the office next week thanks.
I'm using Vray materials, graphics card is a quadro 4000, latest driver.
I have noticed this only seems to happen on more heavier poly scenes but not all the time.
If I switch to dx mode the textures then become visible but I then have shadows which can't be turned off.

Thanks,
