Hi, what's your version of 3ds Max and Windows?

What's your system spec?

Does it worked yesterday?

Do you have soft selection enable?

And finally, if you think your configuration is ok, maybe you could try to reset your settings to default.

Note that this procedure have solved many many problems in 3ds Max related to UI, tools, missing elements etc.

If you close and restart 3ds Max and start a new scene do you have the same problem?

I think you will need to reset 3ds Max to default, the procedure is pretty simple,

Hello;

Most probably you have Window / Crossing option in Window.

Switching this option to Crossing will fix this for you. In the image below, i've marked the button (it is next to Select and Move button). It should not be "clicked" to stay in the Crossing mode (just as in the image below).
