I've tried to do it with no succes.

Then I've switched to TGA with Alpha channel.

Works great 😉

on the opacity map.

change the following:

mono channel output = Alpha
Alpha Source = Image Alpha

everything else as default.

also if your using the same map for the diffuse color slot and the opacity slot(one texture map for both slots), make sure they're a copy of each other, not an instance.

....another tip, Sometimes you can get a strange white border around the outline of the image where its borders meet the transparent area of the texture. If you uncheck the 'premultiplied alpha' checkbox it will remove any white bordering(Most of the time you can leave it checked).

I've personally not had any prob's using png's as alphas.

Hope this helps!

Sorry! How do I export png file to TGA with Alpha channel in Photoshop? I always export TGA with 32 bit/pixel, but I do not see the alpha channel option.

If you save TGA as 32 bit it should have the Alpha channel. 24 bit will not.

Change these Channel Output settings for the version of the map you use for opacity. The map should them appear as a black and white mask.

Seems you must merge all layers to enable the alpha option when saving the file.

It's a crying shame how difficult it is to get proper alpha textures. And if you manage to get it to work, good luck having transparency in the viewport!
