PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE default chamfer setting to 'smooth chamfer' only

If I've missed the option to default this, I'm tired of redoing the smoothing groups on a mesh when I chamfer an edge for it to apply a single smoothing group to the whole mesh.

Chamfer was defaulted to this a few versions ago, and it's always been a pain in the arse.

Please set the default to smooth chamfer only in future versions if you could!!

Hello @jibijib,

I think this is a good idea, but if you really want this changed the place to do it is in the Feature Request board.  If you do submit the request, post the link here and I'll vote on it.  It's also easier to get votes for your idea this way because as people find your thread they'll have an easy link to your submitted idea as well.  There are also some free scripts out there which store preferred settings for certain tools, but they have limited support on certain versions of Max.  Might be worth a look in the meantime.

Another option might be to post in the programming forum to see if one of those people can help create a macroscript or something which sets tool settings a certain way on load.  It's a bit beyond my ability but the people in the programming forum are next level.

I've submitted.

I think it's currently the biggest PITA in max, I keep losing smoothing groups.

Hello @jibijib,

If you uncheck "Smooth" your groups won't be lost.  If you uncheck it it leaves your old groups and if the new polys happen between two faces that share a smoothing group the chamfer gets that group.  I think your problems are actually caused by the smooth in the chamfer tool.  I'm not sure it does what you think it should.  I may be mistaken, but I think you'll have better luck just leaving it off.  Worst case scenario you fix the chamfer instead of the whole object.  Does that make sense?

The problem is, remembering to uncheck smooth, which is what I do. Chamfering 200 times in a session, you have to untick it pretty much everytime.

Can any modeller come forward who wants max to apply a 45 degree smoothing group to their nearly finished 30,000 poly model - it's a pointless feature and it is defaulted to ON.

If you apply a 45 degree smoothing group to an object, you'll usually end up with one smoothing group and it will look like a smoothed blob.

Agreed, plus it also takes much more time to smooth the whole model (the default) with highpoly objects, while the chamfer operation itself is fast.

As a workaround, you can use this callback (save as .ms file and put to scripts/startup folder) that sets the chamfer smoothing to off with every new object that's converted to poly. Existing poly objects will still suffer from the issue, however at least all the new ones will be okay:

editablePoly_defaultsSetter = NodeEventCallback mouseUp:on modelStructured:(fn _ e ids = for id in ids where isKindOf (local node = GetAnimByHandle id) Editable_Poly do node.edgeChamferSmooth = off)

Thanks for the feedback @jibijib.

There is a note in the tracker which basically states that the defaults should change to 'off'.  The suggestion is to disable this by default in the future.  You might also put in a Feature Request which would likely be considered.  If you do an post the link here, I'll vote on it.

What do you mean? You can create a preset with any settings you want and set that preset as default out of the box.
