Orbit around own axis with alt-mmb like in walkthrough mode?

Hi,
I am having massive, massive frustration with the default way navigation works in 3ds Max. I can't get used to the way the view orbits around an axis few meters in front of my view. I want my view to rotate around "my own" axis, similar to how it does with Walk Through or in First Person views in general (Unreal Engine for example). I've tried to enable the different orbiting modes but none work for me. This is a huge pain in the bottom trying to navigate inside interior scenes, tight corridors etc. It's weird that with the default orbit setting (Arc Rotate) it actually does it randomly sometimes.
