obsolete files - .3ds to .max

hello,

I was downloading some models earlier only to discover that most of them wouldn't work. they are in .3ds format. I'm pretty sure that they are from an obsolete version of Max but I'm not entirely sure. What I'm thinking is that I need to find some kind of converter to change them to .max files. Is this right? But really I have no idea what I'm really doing here. If anyone could help me that would be great.
Thanks

You can't "Open" a .3ds - it's a file type which need to be Imported.
File | Import and select .3ds as the type.

Max 2016 (SP1/EXT1)
Win7Pro x64 (SP1). i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX11.
nVidia GTX760 (2GB) (Driver 430.86).
