New User - 2 questions

Sold my C4D license and paid for a year subscription to Max. Sorry, but expect a lot of basic questions.

1. I had Max a year ago for a month. When I paid for the subscription it opened my existing copy. How do I find out if it's current? When I go to Help > About 3DS Max it doesn't say anthing about service releases. If I click Check for Updates, it takes me to a download page with all versions available but doesn't tell me if my version is current or not.

2. Is there a way to show selected elemnts on screen? In other words, Modo displays in the upper left corner of the viewport how many vertices, polys or lines selected. Same in C4D. Can I do that in Max?

Hi,

Run your Application Manager (should be in Max group in Start Menu > Programs) - it will show you available updates, SPs, extentions, etc.... Also you can log into your Subscription Manager (http://www.autodesk.com/subscription/overview) and check for new versions, etc as well.

As far as showing how many selected verts, polys, etc ... there is a text status message in the lower left - below the viewport to the immediate right of the listener window that will give some info on this.

I never paid much attention to the Application Manager. Surprising how much stuff there is in there. What with SP2 and EXT2 it's kind of like Xmas all over again for me.

For the other question I've found xView under the Views menu. Not exactly what I was looking for but very close.

You probably want "Statistics" which the default hotkey is 7. You can configure what it shows by going to the viewport menu (upper left corner of viewport) and right clicking on the third piece of text (you get a different right click menu depending on if you click on the [+] or the [viewName] or the [displayType] ) So right click the [displayType]  (the one that says wireframe/shaded/realistic/etc) and teh go to configure at the bottom. That open the Viewport Configuration dialog, one of the tabs is "Statistics" where you can choose Vertex/Polygon/Face/FPS count and toggle counting selected boject only, whole scene, or both.
