Mentalray and other renders are gone, error code 87 please help!

So i started up my 3ds max 2017 (student version), and i got an error at first that was similar to this:

error_code.jpg

but at first it was something along the lines it being blocked etc and i did some digging and opened port 7000 so that

error dissapeared then this error code came up as stated above is giving me a hard time. when i get into max there is no vray or Mental ray

renderer etc there anymore. I do still have the mentalray.dlz file in my plugins folder.

but now I have no idea what to do, ive searched the net but havent found any good asnwers. I Hope some can help me with this, would be forever thankful if anyone could solve this so i can continue my school projects!

Extra info:I'm using windows 7 home premium, and havent really installed anything special lately, ive done some ccleaner (if it matters any to this subject), but still used the program after that. I have not installed any service packs for 3DS max.

The last time i used the program was about 3 days ago now where i did a frame by frame render in mental ray for a hardsurface showcase animation

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

I am happy to help you with this, thanks for the descriptive post.  I've gone ahead and attached the installers to this message, can you try to reinstall mental ray for me?  Please let me know if this solves your problem, my first thought is somehow the installation has been corrupted.  If this doesn't work we'll keep digging.

Hey Alfred, thanks for the welcome & quick reply! 🙂

I Downloaded it and got prompted to remove, repair or modify, i first did a remove and reinstall, then putting the  the other files you added (asuming that was what i was supposed to do) into the autodesk folder. Though It did now changed the error message and code to 1005. *see attachment

(its in norwegian but it basicly says on the last bit: The volume have an uknown filesystem. Please control that the proper filesystem drivers are loaded,

& that the volumet isnt damaged. I then tried rolling back and just install the mental ray without moving over the files attached. gave me the same

message, still no renders. Also tried Repair

Kind regards S

Hello @Anonymous,

Thank you for the update.  This is pretty strange.  Is max installed onto an external hard drive?  I wonder if your hard drive is possibly having some issues.  You may want to check out your event viewer logs for any information on that.  Technically you didn't need to add those files to any folder, just run the installers and it should do the rest.

I think our best bet here is to reinstall 3ds Max.  I don't recommend it often but file system errors are super rare for 3ds Max, yours is the first I have ever seen.  CCleaner may have done some damage to the registry regarding Max, but it's not really clear if it's the cause.  I think to be safe we just wipe Max out and reinstall.  I have an article here on how to get rid of the leftover files before you start to reinstall.  Please keep me posted.

Another thing to keep in mind since you are in Norwegian is that there is a bug in 3ds Max that can cause issues if your username has any special characters in it.  (Such as å, æ, and ø.)  If your username contains these, you may want to make a new user that has a name without any of those characters in it.  I don't believe this can cause the error you are having, but it can cause other ones so I just wanted to mention it.

Hmm that might be, i have a normal hard-drive and a SSD for windows and 3DS max mainly, though its really small so its almost always full/in red.

i do occasionally have to use ccleaner and cleanup related stuff on it because it just fills up constantly. (I have two 3DS max if it matters any, one old from 2010 on the normal hard-drive, the current on my SSD). Anywho i checked up in the event viewer a whole week back, and the only thing to note is

a week back i had some issues with an update and the drive found an error on the ''handler'' at \Device\Harddisk2\DR3. Not quite sure what that means.

It seems i cant go back to earlier save point of the computer nor replace/redo the registry i did a while back either.

I'm currently doing a clean reinstall, ill give an update as soon as its complete and i've tried it out 🙂

Thank you for the update @Anonymous,

Maybe setting your project folder to that other drive would be good so that your autoback files aren't constantly filling your primary hard drive.  I'll keep an eye out Monday for any status updates, and thanks again for the information.

Hello @Anonymous,

I've been looking into this error 87 and it looks like it might be a Windows error rather than a Max error.  Do you have an ATI video card?  The original error was about your disk drive and this one may be related to your graphics driver. This thread has something similar with error 87, it might be worth a look. This link goes an an article that may also help.  Note that these links are for AutoCAD but I think they are listing the same error.  It looks like an incorrect registry entry was made by ATI drivers, but more likely CCLeaner removed an entry it didn't understand and created some weirdness.  Maybe reinstalling your graphics card driver would make sense.

Is there anything else you can tell me about your system?  Is it by any chance running on Parallels or bootcamp?

Hello @Anonymous,

Thank you very much for the update, I'm glad it's working for you now!  You should be able to reinstall Vray now that this issue is resolved, or it may be that you need to update your Vray version.  Thank you very much for keeping me updated and if you ever need anything you know where to find me.
