max2015 backward compatability

With all previous versions of max, we where able to save in the last 4 years of versions, for example max2014 can save all the way down to 2010. Knowing this, when i purchased 2015 i was met with the VERY nasty surprise that it only saves to 2012. I NEED to be able to save in 2011 format. How do i make that happen?

Current version plus the previous 3 (not 4). Like the "Previous Versions" benefit of being on Subscription, which allows access to the current + 3 previous releases on a single seat (license). As new versions are added, the earliest "previous version" is dropped, from both the Subscription Benefit and the SaveAs. The only way to do what you want is to have an existing License for a suitable previous version which has not been updated to a new version i.e. is no longer on Subscription. Even then, you will eventually lose access to that one as well as new versions are released and that version drops off the list.

Max 2016 (SP1/EXT1)
Win7Pro x64 (SP1). i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX11.
nVidia GTX760 (2GB) (Driver 430.86).

Thanks for the answer, after more searching (which i should have done, my bad) it does seem like its only the previous 3 versions are supported.

Silly, but save in 2014 and from there to 2011. Or you can export fbx. Personally, 2012 is the oldest Max I'd use anyway. It's the first true modern Max all later were built upon.
