Max 2020.1 constant selection and viewport problems

Hi,

I'm using Max 2020.1 and I have constant selection and viewport problems. Every single day I have to restart Max 2-3 times just because of this. As I work, suddenly I cannot select any object. Also, sometimes this is accompanied by viewport problems like image ghosting and very severe slowdown. It goes away after restarting Max but a few hours later it happens again. This is getting very very irritating and frustrating! It happens on two separate systems here with Max 2020.1. The GPUs are GTX 1080 Ti on one of them and GTX 980 on the other.

Hello @office ,

Tearing on graphics is often a heat problem.  When was the last time these two machines were dusted?  If you take the side off your computer, does the problem still occur?  (easy test).

Ghosting on the other hand, often relates to drivers from my experience.  I don't know if the 980 and the 1080 share drivers, but maybe check driver versions or see if there is an update.  If there isn't an update, maybe downgrade as a test to an older version of the drivers.

One other thing you could try is to create a new profile in Windows in case somehow yours was corrupted.  It happens and when it does it create weird problems like this.  However, the chance of that on two systems is pretty low.

Are you saving/working over a network or locally?  Are you working out of a OneDrive or other such folder?  Just collecting info.  In case someone else comes to this thread with a similar issue, can you list your OS, A/V, and processor please?  Then possibly similarities can be found.   Thanks!

Thanks a lot for the tips. I think I'll try installing different versions of the graphics drivers first. I'm sure it's not an overheating problem because the fans are not spinning faster when this happens. Especially the 1080 Ti is going to alert me instantly as it is the blower version and it's pretty loud when the fans are at full speed. I'll report back with the results. Thanks again.

Hello @office ,

I can't stop thinking about the ghosting.  I had a similar problem with a game a few years ago called Deus Ex.  There are a couple other things that could make this happen.  I don't remember which one solved it for me, I think it was the power settings.

1) Bad video cable.  Maybe try a different one if you have one lying around.

2) Make sure in Power Settings you are using "High Performance"
3) Maybe related to Vsync?  Maybe try overriding/enabling in the NVIDIA control panel for 3dsmax.exe.

4) Are you using an Aero theme in Windows?  Weirdly, Aero themes must be used in order for Vsync to work.  (Bane of my existence.)

5) Lastly, try unplugging other peripherals just as a test.  If the problem goes away, it must be a power draw issue of some kind.
