MAX 2018 problems so far

Hi, just giving some feedback on my first go with 2018. If I've simply missed something please let me know what I've done wrong.

No Help/Help or Help/What's New pages

Click on either and I get a dead page. Shocking thing to find on launch day.

Swapping to Arnold Renderer gets a barrage of "material not supported" Error messages when you open the Material Editor or adjust the thumbnails (screen shot attached), could you not have suppressed that or found a work around?

Arnold materials shown only as grey in the viewport. Is this a limitation of my machine or do Arnold Materials not show even their basic shades in the viewport?

Trying to search for Arnold Renderer Help (as I've no idea what any of the new materials are) and all I'm getting is MAX 2017 Help files. Where do I go for how to use this new Renderer?

I'm stopping to do some work in 2017 now, might come back to add more later. Or other people feel free to continue where I left off!

Thanks, where were the instructions to download that? I didn't see them.

And how come it wasn't included in the 7GB download?

Other problems.

1. You can't resize Layer/Scene Explorer, Curve Editor, State Sets and similar windows once you open them. You need to start moving it around and then it will let you resize them.

2. When you undock docked windows, their shape remains the same as when they were docked. It shouldn't do this. Their shape should be the same as before they were docked.

3. Black bars appear over the Command Panel if you resize it. See screnshot below:

command_panel_bars.jpg

How can such simple stupid bugs exist in a final version? Why were they not fixed before official release? That's a shame. If features are not 100% complete and usable, please don't add them into the final version! I don't care if Max 2018 won't have QT 5 or whatever when simplest stuff is broken.

After the 2017 fiasco, this looks like another unfinished unusable version. I will stay on 2016 for a 2nd year in a row. 2800 EUR down the drain so far. "Thanks", ADESK!!!

you're asking too much

even microsoft can't make their start menu work proper in most versions

ad can't develop ui for decades, not a big deal, someday they'll find a talanted coder, who knows stuff

Hello Office,

Just an FYI -- I've got a 4K monitor here in our offices, and a second HD monitor next to it, and have started seeing this error with other programs, like Skype (but not 3ds Max 2018). Skype had black bars appearing over the UI, and I had to close it from the Task Manager.

As near as I can tell, this isn't a Max issue -- this is, once again, some weirdness with display drivers, mis-matched dual monitor resolutions, and Windows 10. We're looking into it, but just wanted to let you know.

Best regards,

so

- yes, the console error massages when switching to arnold should be off by default.

- Im confirming that scene, layer explorers and the command panel freezing not just max itself but OS, im getting windows comletely frozen for a moment when trying to resize the mentioned things...

- using old-style file menu seems like a steb back...

- overall its not faster than 2017 even slower with the present bugs

-getting rid of mental ray wasnt a smart decision, a lot of people still using it.

really bad release and it seems to me that im gonna be using 3ds max 2017 for a much longer period than i wanted. Smiley Frustrated

no it's not....see the icon next to the 'graph' (wavy line) up top ? it's ON...the ribbon is ON...click it...to toggle..

yes it is, having another toggle is good but it is a bug, because minimizing ribbon should also affect the viewports like it was in previous 3ds versions...

i know Minimizing is not working...another user already complained BEFORE you.... I pointed the way to toggle OFF the ribbon entirely...now if you want to be smart and argue the point....there's no need.....keep whinging about the Minimizing function not working....and please don't use the toggle button that i pointed out to you...coz it's not an 'acceptable' answer......yeah yeah yeah...heard it all before...

I can add some issues to this as well:

- Switching to Arnold and trying to render a second time crashes 3ds max.

- Light lister doesn't support Arnold lights (as far as I can see).

- Viewport doesn't display the arnold light's intensity, so there's no way of knowing if your scenes is lit or completely black.

Hi everyone,

I have an 18 computer render farm, which all run on 2016 SP2.  I was thinking about biting the bullet and doing the upgrade to 2017 SP1 or even 2018 but after poking around a bit, it appears that no one really liked 2017 and everyone hates 2018.

Also, it appears that upgrading 2018 would basically bring our operation to it's knees as AD has removed MR and even render farm capabilities.

So, after reading forums like this, I'm planning on leaving us on 2016 for the foreseeable future.  I'm curious if anyone has any reason(s) why I shouldn't continue to run 2016.

Thanks.

Be careful with informal polls of forums - those who are satisfied aren't likely to be posting.  It's like asking how many angels are dancing on the dot of this "i".

Still, if what you have is working there shouldn't be a blind push to upgrade, especially with that number of installs.  Does either newer version provide something you are looking for?  Does it impose limitations (like render licenses) that you cannot work around?  Do your current work-arounds/plug-ins/etc. function on the new version, or do changes in the program already do that?  Have you evaluated cost of various render licenses, if you need to purchase them separately?  Most importantly, have *you* tested them yet?  Don't depend on others for works/doesn't work comments - everyone's work environment is a bit different.  You need to do thorough and in-depth testing in your own environment and work process.  At some point you are likely going to need to upgrade, so it's good to have a process in place well beforehand so you can roll out in a controlled (and hair retaining Smiley Happy ) fashion.

I've been using Max for 12 years so I'm good on my evaluation process, part of which is reading up on the latest software releases on Autodesk's forums but thanks for the lecture.

I was simply asking the community if 2017 or 2018 have any redeeming qualities that warrant an upgrade from 2016.

Hello @chris.ollis and welcome to the community,

I'll do my best to address the posts here.  To all the posters in this thread, it's always best to make a thread for each issue.  This thread can never have a marked solution because there are too many topics here, and responding to this many questions takes a long time.  That being said, I'll address these as best I can.

1) These are now up, but you're right the links weren't working on the first day.

2) This has already been addressed it seems, as I no longer get these messages.  You can download a newer version of Arnold for Max at Manage.Autodesk.com or on the Solid Angle website.  I think this resolves this issue.

3) Yes, the gray materials is being worked on.  Diffuse maps work, but you're right that the flat colors do not show currently.  A workaround might be to use a simple 1x1 texture of the color you want to show.

Hello @office,

1) Interesting, I am logging this one now.

2) This is by design according to the tracker.  If you want this feature, please put something on the Feature Request board.

3) This is actually a Windows 10 issue. We have repro'd this with Skype and other applications internally.

Having used it for months now, I think 2018 is a great version of Max.  To each their own, but it's pretty great for me.

--

@I_Megaman_i,

1) It is now, simply update from Manage.Autodesk.com or from Solid Angle website.

2) Nothing in Max can freeze your OS.  That's most likely a hardware, driver, or real time scanning problem coming from your OS.  I recently updated Avast at home and it totally stopped Max, Netflix, and Firefox from working and had to reinstall it to fix it.  I would create a new thread and we can investigate this together.

3) I personally like the old style menu.  Then again, I use the old list view instead of the Scene Explorer and I use the old map browser.  This was actually my favorite UI change when I initially opened 2018.  I could understand if the menus were too small for some people now though.

4) It's much faster than 2017, especially with opening XRef's, timeline scrubbing, Blended Box Map interaction speed,  and things like that.  I've measured it myself, it's significantly faster.  I think it must seem slow to you because of problems with 2).  I'm happy to help with these problems if possible, just create a new thread please.

5) The Save Custom UI schemes are technically meant to backup your workspace within the same version of Max.  Ideally they are forwards compatible, but that's not a guarantee due to updates to the UI which are still in progress that will prevent these from working perfectly between versions.   However saving and loading them from 2017 into 2017 should work fine.  I know it does in 2017, I reload my settings all the time after helping people in the forums.

6)  Yes this is annoying.  I don't see a log entry in the tracker for it but I am adding one now.  Done.  @vusta's workaround is a good one for the time being, but this has been logged.

7) Talk to Rappa tools creator about getting an update.  Give him/her some time, it's a new version and some changes must be made in the code I'm sure.

@PaalGustavWiderberg9222,

1) Please try to update Arnold from Manage.Autodesk.com or from the Solid Angle website.  This has been fixed but happened because the user was scaling the lights.  Technically you shouldn't scale lights, you should always use the controls for scale on the modifier menu.  (Quad X, Quad Y.)

2) This issue has already been logged.  They do show up in the explorer, but not in the lister as you've noted.

3) This is a known issue and is being worked on.

Hello @SeattlePatrick,

This would probably be better as a new thread.  This thread has become too wide to focus on this issue but I'd be happy to discuss it with you in another thread.  Long story short, there are some big improvements to 2018 (and some amazing things in the works) but if you have an existing render farm on MR then there would be a rendering node license cost to bear.

Just wanted to confirm that Arnold colours are now showing correctly in my viewport having visited manage.autodesk.com clicking on my max downloads link and then updates and add ons. In here I found the Arnold update, installed it and all seems fine now.

thank you everyone that posted, it makes interesting reading.

- Editing the working pivot does not work (it stays frozen at 0-0-0). Max18, Update1.

- Editing custom toolbar buttons does not work. Max18, Update1.

But come on - the working pivot not, well, working? Terrible.
