Hello,

So i imported some materials into 3ds max 2017, and they don't have the color or texture as the ones shown in their images, did it with multiple materials, they just arent what is shown on image.

Can someone help me?

Hi @Anonymous

More information is needed from you. There are many different reasons for different results with materials in Max vs external programs or textures (e.g., Viewport Display settings, scene lighting, type of material, selected render engine, etc, ) so please post screenshots of your materials in max vs what you want and it will help figure out what the issue is.

Hello, im using vray, there are 3 vray lights around the object, what i dont understand is the material is not shown in the material editor properly, not just on my object after assign.

Im trying  plastic materials,  just a little bit of noise/celular, maybe some fallout.

What type of material are you using in Max (Vray, Physical, Standard, other) ?  Is the target material you are trying to emulate a PBR material by any chance?  For that you need multiple maps to effectively create the result.  In theory, you can reproduce the result procedurally, but it is probably harder to get a perfect match.  Regarding the material display in the material editor, in the Render Setup Dialogue (at the very end) , there is a rollout called "Assign Renderer" that lets you separately set the render engine for the material editor.  Generally this should be set to be locked to the current renderer.

Im using Vray materials, no it is not PBR, yes my render setup is set to VRay for materials editor as well.

Have a look at this video explaining how to improve quality of material editor preview with vray in max by creating a custom object and lighting on that object in the material editor using HDRI.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmzooXSYvsE

I tried to reproduce your issue (below) and am getting what I expect from just the default setup with the material editor which I frankly just use as crude starting point when tweaking materials due to the difference between scene lighting and the default lights in the material Editor.    So maybe the above video will help you get a better result.   Hope it helps.

I forgot to add that if you wind up creating the sample object with lighting as explained in the video, you need to run the following single line of maxscript to display the sample object after creating it and selecting it the max material editor options.

setMTLMeditObjType meditmaterials[1] 4

This is due to a bug in Max that has not been fixed and is explained here:

If you like the changes made in the material editor, try implementing the same lighting changes in the scene for render purposes if you haven't already done so.  A dome light with hdri image lighting can greatly improve rendering.  Otherwise it's just down to tweaking the settings in your material.  There is no MaX bug here as far as I can tell from your posts.  In your image above for instance the noise map seemed too strong and was messing up the surface smoothness.

To me it looks like the material might be the same, but your lighting/gamma/exposure is different.

So i started a new vray render, just turned on the GI environment, nothing else in the scene, loaded different materials, still the same problem...not getting the materials i saw in the pictures..

What kind of environment, the standard override? It's simply a color. Without a narrow, bright spot/light you won't get any highlights.

Perhaps upload a stripped down scene (saved back to the oldest 3ds max version possible).

You might also consider downloading the sample scene in question and render it yourself with the material applied.

The environment is standard GI,  no maps no lights in the scene. - bad result

Added vray lights -bad result.
