the license has nothing to with the material are you talking about the materials themselves the material editors, or when you assign the material to an object have you any lights in your scene?

can you post some images of the render and the viewport to see the problem is and give more detail

Not certain. But might be some reason such as:

  • You haven't switch to VRay render engine in F10 panel. It still use standard scanline, maybe?
  • There're setting in Material editor that only update active slot (other slots remain black). All will be black in 1st open file. But this case is rare unless you use someone else PC. But looks like you clicked in one of slots, it's still black.. then it's not the case.
  • VRay installation problem.

Little note: Use Printscreen button on your keyboard easier and provide better quality in screenshot (angle, brightness, etc...). It's digital.

Hello @Anonymous,

This might be a better question for the Vray forums but in a general sense from my (long) experience with Vray this is because the license server doesn't have a license, is turned off, or is being blocked via a firewall.  Or, another user in your workplace took the last license or your current material renderer isn't Vray.  To check your license server you can go to a browser window and type:

localhost:30304

Also double check here:

materialeditor.png

From there you can check the status of your license server.  Can you please check those for me?  If this is a new installation of Vray you need to get your dongle programmed by emailing them a file generated from that menu.  Your reseller or the help file should have walked you though it.  Please let me know if this helps!

Best Regards,

Hi Alfred,

Thank you for replying me. Yes, after checking, it is because of Vray License. Now, it works already. 🙂

Hi
I was working with 3dmax that suddenly I came across this issue that in material editor all material became in black .
I have licence so shouldn't be licence issue also I can render and I can see all material in the renders looks good. the issue is I cant detect material .

I found one way for myself which is not ideal that I just change the Target from production rendering mode to
activeshade mode and then I can see the material but if I want to render again I need to change the target to production rendering mode .
is there any reason that I cant see the material as they are?

I faced the same problem, and I am sure that this was not due to licensing errors. The bug is linked with switching rendering engines and adding lights. I was using Vray in past, then decided to switch back to Arnold. All the materials were showing properly, but as soon as I added the default Arnold sky map in the texture of Arnold light and clicked on render, all of a sudden every material turned black in the material editor.

But when I click on the specif materials to preview them (the ball-shaped preview), it was actually showing the correct material, and also in the material editor slot, it was restored (only this material was non-black now).
