Line draws as a tube...

I'm trying to create a shape with lines and then extrude to make a baseboard molding. However, when I start drawing the line, it draws as a hollow tube!?  The only thing I can think of is that in one of my past projects, I was modeling a lamp cord by drawing a line and then a circle and lofting the two. Now it seems that my line tool wants to do that by default!? Thoughts?

Check "Rendering" flyout when creating a line: at least "enable in Viewport" is activated with a radial setting (no need to loft a cord btw. if you use this feature).
