Language version changed automatically

Hi all

I have recently installed 3ds Max 2016 and used it for a few days. It was all installed in English language version.

I opened 3ds Max today and the language version was changed to Japanese. I have no idea how to change it back and why it decided to pick a random language version for me after a week of using it. I am running it on Windows 8.

Since I can't read Japanese I am unable to go into preferences and look for language options. I tried "Repairing" it through Programs/Software feaure in Windows Control Panel but it did not help.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards

You could fix this via editing the registry ( setting "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\3dsMax\18.0\CurrentLanguage" to "ENU" ), but i would recommend using a shortcut to 3ds max and passing "/Language=ENU" to launch in US English. That would save you from future problems with the language

so the shortcut target should read like:

<your 3ds Max path>\3dsmax.exe /Language=ENU

Hi spacefrog

Thank you for a quick response. I have tried both of your suggestions with no luck. With the shortcut editing - once I change the target in the shortcut properties to "<path>\3dsmax.exe /Language=ENU" I get a message "The name <path> specified in the Targer box is not valid."

When I opened the registry and tried to navigate to the path you mentioned I can get as far as HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Autodesk/3dsMax/18.0.  The only subfolders in a folder "18.0" are InfoCenter, MiniDump, Plug-ins_ENU, Plug-ins_JPN, ProSound and WebServices.

Any idea why it's not letting me change the version back to English? I have tried re-installing the software choosing English for language version during the installation but it's still launching in Japanese...

Ah I managed to fix it. I followed your advice about changing the registry. I used the Find feature in the windows registry and it found the CurrentLanguage entry. I changed the value to ENU and it runs fine now. For some reason I couldnt navigate to Current version manually. Thank you so much! 🙂

Yeah - sorry - it was me being lazy copy/pasting the registry key string

The "CurrentLanguage" should'nt be in the key string, as it's a value, not a key

I woulld edit the above post to read more clearly but that's not possible any longer ...

So simply remove the trailing "CurrentLanguage" from above key and look for the Value "CurrentLanguage" under that key
