Autodesk hasnt figured this one out yet? Why do I get dependency loop errors with linking lights to an object?

Where are you seeing dependency errors? In what context and under what circumstances?

More detail, possibly an example scene, required.

Hi Steve. I get this error when I try to link a light to an object. I want the light to follow the object when the object moves.

Has to be scene or object specific because I just linked an Omni to a Teapot (:P) without any errors (scanline, no material). Also tried a Photometric Target Spot with both the target and the light itself linked to the Teapot which had an A&D material on it (with MR as the renderer).

Is anything linked to the light already? Perhaps by accident? The error suggests that you are linking to an object that already has a link to something linked to your light, creating an infinite loop when resolving the links.

Try saving your object and lights to a new scene, remove any existing links, and try it again.

I took a light that was instanced from another light. Made it unique. Then "unlinked selection" just to make sure the light wasnt linked to anything. Then tried to link it to the object and still got the error.

Then I created a new light and that one linked fine. Really weird.

Hierarcgy and constrains can cause a loop dependancy. maybe you had a link constraint/orientation constraint or pos constraint on that light.

anything that cause an obj to translate/orientate/scale cannot be translate/orientate/scale by any obj he affected.

I have seen a multi referencial constraint in Mobu. If anyone know about that particular constraint and can repro it in 3dsMax i would really interested to know about it
