Is 128GB too much RAM ?

Sure, being around computers for, let' s say, a little while; I have seen the same question in various realms over various decades but I have finished my new build and now at the position where I can do as planned to go from 64GB to 128GB of ram, of course, matching the existing, for the sake of it.

But do I really need it ?
I might have models with +1m verts but most my stuff now is for 3d printing so the days of terrain mapping and such are long gone. I'm currently modelling a certain droid and having no issues. I do game a little now and then and have no issues there. Notepad runs fine and I really don't struggling viewing a 2 page pdf postage label.

I think I have answered my own question. I saw moving from 16 to 32 made a nice page file increase but moving to 64 reduced it again so from windows 10 days, even windows wasn't expecting much need.

I was looking about buying some tonight and saw someone selling some with the underline "selling because i bought 128 and found it was overkill".

I wonder if ram bragging rights will help me find a date. I jest. Merry christmas.

For 3d printing you probably don't need it.  One thing to consider is that not all RAM is compatible in certain configurations.  So you may find that the 64 gb is stable but suddenly isn't when you add more RAM sticks to the m/b.  Your motherboard manual should have more information.

That being said, I have 64 too and only ever needed 128 once due to a poorly optimized archviz scene.  So, sometimes it is needed for rendering but for modeling and exporting I'd think you're fine.  But if you want 128, you want 128.  That's ok too!

Buy a better graphics card!

There's no harm in having more RAM, but probably overkill - it's hard to say until you test what you are doing with 32/64GB etc. I never noticed when I had a mesh with either 10 or 10 million vertices. The software streams them visually through the GPU and shaders nowadays.

>>= upgrade video card

You can go off people, you know ? (I jest) I had no intentions of upgrading GPU and now you have said that, I am struggling to ignore the idea. With that said, the only real lag or issue I see is when I go for that render button and the cpu I assume, goes weak at the knees. I can't begin to show I understand how it works but it is disheartening to know I have gone from 1 to 2 to 4 to 8 to 20 cores and still feel that button being pressed.

Again I wonder if I am upgrading for upgrading sake. But then I know the GPU is going to be a noticable upgrade, especially for scenes like I have rendered tonight. So maybe it's the right idea. And with that, I thank you for showing me to open my wallet and risk emptying it haha

happy new year.

:grinsendes_Gesicht:

I use Substance Painter a lot and lasted with a good old 980GTX card for years, I have a 4090 in my laptop I think now and the difference is like black and white.

gawd I cant remember what my gainward was back in the 7/800s, then I went to a 1650super which I could easily make work hard. this 3060 isn't too shabby, in a desktop setting. I have tried black ops 6 this last week and it runs so nice. I don't feel any issues. I had a look at prices and see the 4070 is now just above what I paid for the 3060. That might be a next step I guess.

Couple things to consider:

1) The 5XXX series comes out soon, which should lower the prices for older cards.

2) If you're American, cards might cost 40%-60% more once Drumpf takes office due to tarriff threats.
