Importing .max files to unity: problems with textures/diffuse maps not showing

hello there, anyone can help me with this issue? i am exporting .max files to unity and i am having massive problems with diffuse maps that are not showing at all on my 3d object when exported to unity. i have both tried with exporting obj, fbx (and max) files with and without embedded media. the diffuse map shows in the unity asset as a separate file but is not showing on the 3d object. and of course if i try and reapply it in unity, it does not apply it as a diffuse map but as a flat jpeg.
any help would be massively appreciated.
