import .dwg models composed of Bezier surfaces

I have some .dwg models which should be generated by Alias and composed of Bezier surfaces. When being imported into 3ds max, all of them would be forced into facet bodies and appear nasty.

Is there any way to import them as the original Bezier surfaces? In my understanding, 3ds max is capable of handling B-surfaces. Thanks!

When I import this wood molding (attached) it comes through with the Bezier surfaces intact. I'm not sure why you would be having trouble, as this was imported using the default settings.

@brand_maccus   Your model seems to be a 2D drawing with size annotation but no 3D faces. Did you upload the wrong frile? Thanks!

Hi,

Here is my result of bringing in a Bezier Extrusion into 3DSMax from Autocad
If you zoom in on the black shape, you can see the vertex lines:

With these settings:

It's always going to convert to mesh, with incrimental steps this way, afaik.
Whereas if I export from Autocad to .IGEs format (or .STL), it comes in like this:

No stepping. You just have to make sure 'Convert to mesh' is turned off:

Hope this helps,

@darawork    Thanks for replying! I 'm not a user of AutoCAD and and did not created the dwg files myself. I thought that 3ds max is produced by the same company as AutoCAD and should be able handle dwg files corrently.

Hi,

What can I say? It doesn't. I doubt the exact same bunch of exact people made both programs. Adobe make Photoshop and Illustrator, and they're like chalk and cheese.
Another thing 3DSMax hates is AutoCad Blocks, Text, Dimensions, Ray lines and Ellipses.
Interconnectivity between programs and file formats is an age old pain in the ass.

Is there any way you can get the dwgs re-exported as IGEs or STL file formats?
Or you can convert them online here: https://convert.emachineshop.com/

I'm sorry, I shouldn't have used the word surfaces. I use these 2D drawings to create models of wood trim or picture frames (using Sweep or Extrude). You can still use the Handles to modify the Bezier Curves on the imported Spline to modify the end result of the object created, but once you have the end result it will be in the form of a mesh with facets and not curves. I have only worked with AcadLT so all of my experience with CAD has been in 2D.

I now realize that this probably isn't helpful for what you are asking, I was just pointing out that the curves didn't always disappear from a drawing file upon import (in my experience).

@darawork   I'm not a user AutoCAD. There seems to be some trouble ... Thank you!

@brand_maccus   Thank you for your reply!
