How to copy a reference that has the same structure as the original?

Say I have a spline that is a reference, and I want to create a copy that is instanced below the reference bar and unique above it...just like the original object. How do I do that?

Because if I duplicate it, my only options are 1) make a copy, which removed the reference altogether 2) make an instance, which makes the modifiers above the reference bar instanced too or 3) make another reference, which just adds a second reference bar to the modifier stack.

If I'm understanding correctly, you'll need to find the original spline that your Reference was made from, and make a new Reference of it.

That's right, but in my case, the original doesn't exist as only an instance anymore...only references. It would make sense if 3dsMax had some sort of 'remove reference' tool, so you could revert an object back to just being an instance.

Oh, I see.  You're trying to recreate the original referenced object.

Check out this message on the forum to see if one of the solutions works - https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-modeling/extract-base-object-of-reference-copy/m-p/8002729#M2...

Unfortunately the script in that thread is doing the right thing for me, and I don't exactly know how to do the second method of copying the base object in the curves editor.

You ALT drag. You can also press the 'Make Unique' button in the modify panel of Edit Mesh or Edit Poly Modifiers. Or use STR Tools from ScriptSpot.
