Would like it to look like this.. but it just smears instead. How would i go about doing it??

Apply appropriate UV mapping.
In the modifier panel assign a UWV Map modifier. Change the type to cylinder and make sure the orientation matches your object.
You may have to increase the tiling amount to make it look right.
