How do i colour half an object in 3ds max 2009?

Iv been trying for a long time now, iv also googled but i cant find any solutions..

I did use a tool called slice but it did things that confused me..

Someone else told me i should use top/bottom tool

What dose that mean?

you can always go into the modifier panel select only the polygons you want and assign the texture and color them like that

And you can go further by applying color/texture to the polygons and then applying a UVW Map modifier on them specifically.

That is it.
Works differently by different objects(!) See attachment.
If positioning “world” is the checked one, by rotation (of the object),
The Top – Bottom position is always oriented to the world.

Or you can use the Multi/Sub Materials and give the polys a different material id.
